The work is graduate-level and up — the board today runs to biostatisticians, pharmacologists, clinical regulatory specialists, lawyers and senior engineers — so this is not a first-remote-job platform. Can a South African join?
Bottom line: Yes — South Africans can join Mercor.
Mercor does not name South Africa, and we will not pretend otherwise. What it says is "work on your schedule from anywhere you choose", and what its own listing data shows is better evidence than the slogan: of 408 live roles we read on their board on 2026-08-22, 263 carried no country restriction at all and are therefore open to a South African. Of the 145 that were restricted, 97 were United States only and exactly one named South Africa (ZAF) among about 180 eligible countries. So you are eligible for most of the board by the absence of a restriction, not because Mercor invites South Africans. Check the eligible countries on the individual listing before you spend time on it.

Bottom line: Most roles are hourly. Across the roles a South African can actually take, the middle of the range is about $72 an hour, though it runs from $14 to $250.
Mercor advertises an "average contracted rate $109/hr" on its experts page. The live board is lower than that headline: across the 392 hourly roles we read on 2026-08-22, the midpoint of the advertised range was a median of $80/hr, and across the 254 hourly roles with no country restriction — the ones a South African can actually take — a median of $72/hr, ranging $14 to $250. US-restricted roles pay better, at a median of $84. Their $109 figure may reflect rates actually agreed rather than advertised, which can run above the posted minimum; we quote what the listings say. Most roles are hourly, a few are per-task or a one-off fee.
How the money reaches you
Bottom line: You are paid weekly, but Mercor does not publish how the money is sent. Ask before you accept a contract.
Weekly. Mercor's experts page states "Get paid weekly for contributing your expertise" and advertises "daily payouts $4M+" across the platform. The payment rail itself is not published — no Deel, Wise, PayPal or wire is named on any page we could reach, and their terms and FAQ pages return 404. Ask how you will be paid into South Africa before you accept a contract.
How hard is it to get in?
Bottom line: Hard to get in — expect a competitive, multi-step process.

You are assessed by their AI rather than interviewed by a person — only 3 of the 408 live roles we read had a scheduled interview attached. "Apply once and receive offers that match your qualifications." The gate is not the application, it is your professional record: these are expert seats and the platform matches on verified expertise. Worth knowing before you apply — 291 of those 408 listings hid the client's name, so you often will not know who you would be working for until later in the process.
