Prolific
Research platform, co-founded at Oxford in 2014, that pays people to take part in online studies — behavioural research, product and brand feedback, and AI evaluation work. You are not hired and there is no employer: researchers publish studies, you pick the ones you want, and you are paid per study. Prolific says a new task is published every two minutes, and that it pays "real money, no gift cards or cashback". The AI training work is seasonal rather than constant; the steady base is academic and market research.
Can a South African join?
Bottom line: No — Prolific does not currently accept people living in South Africa.
South Africa is not on Prolific's supported-country list, and this is the one platform in this directory where the answer is no. Their eligibility page names 48 countries, from Australia to the United States; South Africa is not among them. "Prolific is open to participants from most Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries" — and South Africa is not an OECD member. Their waitlist page is blunter: "You may also be added to the waitlist if you don't meet Prolific's prescreening criteria, or if you reside in a country not supported by Prolific, such as a non OECD country." Everyone now joins through that waitlist, and Prolific states it "isn't a queue, so your position doesn't change over time". South Africans who joined years ago are still working and being paid — the restriction tightened later — but someone signing up from South Africa today should expect to wait rather than to start. Eligibility is judged on where you live, not your passport. We list Prolific because it is recommended everywhere, and this is the fact worth knowing before you spend an evening on it.

They claim to "offer higher payment than many other survey platforms" but put no figure to it. Balances are held in GBP and USD, shown in GBP unless you have a US address. This is supplementary income rather than a salary: it is paid in small amounts per completed study, and how much there is depends on how many researchers currently want your demographic.

Earnings sit in "pending" until the researcher approves your submission, which can take up to 22 days, and a rejected submission is removed rather than paid. After your first four cash-outs Prolific says payments transfer instantly. PayPal works differently in South Africa from most of the countries Prolific serves — check how funds would actually reach your bank before counting on this.
How hard is it to get in?
Bottom line: Hard to get in — expect a competitive, multi-step process.
There is no application to pass — there is a queue to be picked from, and for a South African resident that is the whole difficulty. Prolific's own steps: "Join our waitlist in 3 minutes", then "once tasks are available, you'll get an exclusive invite", then a 15-minute identity verification and a short practice task, then you start. You have no account at all until the invitation arrives — so password resets and logins will not work while you wait. Invitations go out by demographic demand, not by how long you have waited: "some people get invited within hours, while others wait months or longer", and support cannot tell you your position because there is no position to tell. Combine that with South Africa being outside the supported list and the honest expectation is a wait with no guaranteed end.
