The honest picture
South Africans are not short of remote job boards. We are short of boards that only show work South Africans can actually get. Most aggregators dump thousands of listings that quietly exclude us at the application stage.
This breakdown is counted off the 1326 listings live on this site as of 27 September 2026. Every one of them is remote, and every one carries evidence that a South African may apply — either the employer’s own words or the eligible-location field on their job board. Nothing is published here on a guess.
One number up front, because it shapes everything below: 337 of those 1326 listings state what they pay. The other 989 do not. That is the honest state of this market, and any site that quotes you a confident salary range for remote work from South Africa is filling in the blanks.
Where the work actually is
Counted by category as of 27 September 2026:
- Admin & virtual assistance — 390 roles. The largest cluster by a distance. Executive assistants, operations and back-office support for founders and small businesses abroad. This is where most first remote jobs are.
- Sales & business development — 293 roles. SDR, appointment-setting and closing roles for foreign companies, usually base plus commission on US or UK hours.
- Marketing & content — 188 roles. Paid ads, SEO, content and social for UK and US clients.
- Finance & accounting — 128 roles. Bookkeepers, accountants and analysts for foreign small and mid-sized businesses.
- Software & IT — 129 roles. Developers, QA and data engineers hired remotely, often on UK or US hours.
- Design & creative — 71 roles. Design, video editing and artwork for international brands.
- Customer support — 99 roles. Support and client-success work, remote from South Africa.
- AI & data training — 18 roles. Small as a job count, because this work is not really advertised as jobs — you join a platform and are matched to projects. See the AI training platform guide for the four we have verified.
Who is actually hiring South Africans
The board’s largest sources as of 27 September 2026:
- Somewhere — 436 roles. A US recruiting agency (formerly Shepherd) that places South Africans, Latin Americans and Filipinos into full-time remote roles at US companies. They run the search; the US company hires you. Free for candidates.
- Assist World — 120 roles. A US virtual-assistant agency placing contractors onto single American client accounts across accounting, legal, healthcare, real estate and e-commerce.
- VirtuHire — 80 roles. Places South African talent with UK and US clients across most of the categories above.
- Hire Hangar — 76 roles. Sales, marketing and operations roles for foreign companies.
- Cherry Assistant — 21 roles. Smaller, but the only source on this board where every single listing states its pay.
This list is a snapshot, not a live ranking — it names the five companies that were the largest sources on 2026-08-24. The role counts above update every build; check the companies directory if you want to see who currently has the most listings.
What the pay looks like
Only the 337 listings that state a figure are counted here. Of those, 254 quote a monthly figure in US dollars:
- The middle of the market is $1,500 a month.
- The lower end sits around $1,000, the upper end around $3,000. The highest on the board is $7,000.
- A further 59 listings quote rand directly, from R1,000 to R72,100 a month, with a midpoint of R20,000.
We are not converting the dollar figures to rand here. The exchange rate moves, a converted number goes stale the day it is written, and you can do the sum against today’s rate better than a static page can. What matters more is that dollar-denominated pay is the point: it is why remote work for a foreign company is worth more than the same job locally.
And the caveat that belongs next to every one of these numbers: the 989 listings with no stated figure outnumber the 337 that publish one. Ask early, and ask before you invest hours in an assessment.
What to do next
- Pick one category and one or two companies from the lists above — do not spray applications everywhere.
- Read the listing in full before applying, and check the eligibility line on the page. Every listing here shows where its eligibility evidence came from.
- For platform work rather than jobs, apply through the platform’s own signup, never through a middleman.
- Check the posting date. Some sources keep roles listed for a long time; anything we hold that is over six months old is marked as such on the listing.
- Never pay anyone to apply for a job. Everything on this site is free to apply to.
