What Remote Work Actually Pays a South African, in Real Numbers

Why this page exists

The salary pages ranking for this question are aggregates. One of the better-known ones currently reports a range of nought to $308,000 a year for remote work in South Africa, and says plainly that it is drawn from 29 salaries. Another gave two different monthly ranges within a few weeks. Neither is dishonest. They simply do not have enough data, and an average built on 29 self-reported figures spanning an entire labour market cannot tell you anything you can act on.

We publish 1326 listings, each carrying evidence that a South African may apply. 337 of them state what they pay. That is the set counted below, and nothing here is estimated.

The one number that matters most

989 of the 1326 listings on this board state no pay figure at all. That is the majority by a wide margin, and it is the first thing anyone answering this question should tell you.

So treat every figure below as a description of the minority of employers who publish, not of the market. Employers who state a salary up front are not a random sample. They skew towards the more organised end, and towards roles where the rate is fixed rather than negotiated per client.

Dollar-denominated pay

254 listings quote a monthly figure in US dollars:

• The middle of the market is $1,500 a month.
• The lower end sits around $1,000, and the upper end around $3,000.
• The highest figure currently on the board is $7,000.

The shape of that spread is worth more than any single number in it. Most of this market sits in a fairly narrow band, with a thin tail of much better-paid specialist roles above it. If you are starting out, the lower figure is the one to plan against.

Rand-denominated pay

59 listings quote rand directly, running from R1,000 to R72,100 a month, with a midpoint of R20,000.

Across the whole board, 270 listings that state a figure quote it in dollars, 59 in rand, and 8 in another currency. Rand-paying remote work is a real and legitimate part of this market rather than a consolation prize, and we do not filter it out. Whether the currency should change your decision is a longer argument.

Why we do not convert

You will notice no rand equivalents next to the dollar figures. That is deliberate. The exchange rate moves, a converted figure is stale the day it is published, and you can do the sum against today’s rate more accurately than a static page can. Sites that publish converted ranges and never revisit them are a large part of why so much of this market’s salary information is quietly wrong.

Every figure on this page is recomputed from the live board on each build, so what you are reading is current rather than a snapshot from whenever the page was written. That is also why no date is quoted next to them.

What this means when you are negotiating

1. Ask early. With most listings publishing nothing, the figure is a conversation, and having it in the first conversation costs you nothing.
2. Ask what the figure covers. Monthly, hourly and per-task pay are all present on this board, and a headline rate on one basis tells you very little about another.
3. Ask about the currency and the payment method together. A dollar figure that arrives through a conversion you did not choose is not the figure you agreed. How the money reaches you is part of what it pays.
4. Do not anchor on the top of the range. The highest number on this board belongs to a specialist role, not an entry point.
5. Discount commission-only offers heavily. A large advertised figure with no base is a forecast, not pay.
